Cheyne-Stokes Respiration (CSR) is an abnormal type of breathing characterized by alternating periods of shallow and deep breathing. CSR can be seen in patients with strokes, head injuries or brain tumors, and in patients with congestive heart failure.

CSR can be caused by the following medical conditins:

  • Coma
  • Severe chronic heart failure
  • Hypoxia
  • Stroke
  • Cerebral Haemorrhage
  • Brain tumour
  • Head trauma
  • Normal at high altitude
  • Cerebral disease
  • Cardiac disease
  • Left ventricular failure
  • High altitude
  • Bronchopneumonia (type of Pneumonia)
  • Respiratory infection
  • Cerebral vascular disease
  • Uremia
  • Heart failure
  • Hypertensive encephalopathy
  • Increased ICP
  • Renal failure
  • Stokes-Adams attacks

There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms.

The condition was named after John Cheyne and William Stokes, the physicians who first classified it.
